South West Water's training programme to develop awareness of visual impairment has won a Water Industry Achievement Award.

The company's Sight Specific training programme won the Health and Safety category at the national awards ceremony on 16 May 2016.

The event took place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, National Exhibition Centre on 17 May 2016, and was organised WET News.

Balfour Beatty and Thames Water chose to implement the programme across various projects throughout the country causing it to be a success.

"It was very thought provoking, especially when we put on sleep shades to experience what it's like to be visually impaired. I only had that shade on for 10 to 12 minutes but within two minutes I was completely disorientated," said Lin Melluish, street works manager, South West Water.
